A Letter from our President

At Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle, we are moving with alacrity toward our opening in the summer of 2024, when we will offer our Summer Bridge (professional skills) program for incoming freshmen, followed by that dramatic day when we open our doors for the first time.

For now, the sun splashes on the waters, mountains, and trees of Seattle, as midsummer reminds us of the magnificence of God’s creation - and provides inspiration for our new school crest (see more below).

As tempting as it is to hop on a bike and head for the hills, however, our small-but-growing CRJS leadership team is working hard in our “classroom/office” space pursuing our mission to provide a top-notch, college-preparatory education and four years of professional work experience to all those beautiful young people preparing to enter eighth grade this fall.

We feel that sense of urgency even more strongly in light of a story published this week in the New York Times. On a federal standardized test called the NAEP given across the U.S. in the fall of 2022, eighth graders scored an average of 256/500 in reading, and 271/500 in math, down from average scores of 260 and 280 just three years ago, before the COVID pandemic. According to the Times, “Achievement declined across lines of race, class and geography. But in math, especially, vulnerable children - including Black, Native American and low-income students - experienced bigger drops.”

Despite the deleterious impacts of the pandemic, we are surrounded by signs of hope. Chief among them is our Next Gen crew, a collection of twenty and thirty-somethings who have rallied around our school. Many of the Next Gen are graduates of Jesuit/Catholic schools, and especially motivated to ensure that all students in south Seattle have access to the same excellent education they received.

So, the Next Gen’ers rolled up their sleeves (photos above), spread the word about CRJS to friends, and continued to expand our network of supporters. We are so grateful to the first 50 members of Next Gen; I can’t wait to meet the next 50! Want to get involved with the Next Gen group and give back? Contact Sam Dittman at [email protected].

As you will read below, our leadership team is also adding talent, our story is being told (as in the current version of Jesuits West magazine), and buzz is growing about this new school coming to life in south Seattle. We welcome you aboard this joy-filled journey!

A Fresh Look for Our New School

CRJS is excited to launch our official school logo and branding. Inspired by the classic Cristo Rey Network logo, the CRJS version is distinctive and contemporary. The navy and gold colors are in darker tones to root us in the PNW environment.

The new CRJS crest combines three elements of our identity: the Cristo Rey Network crown with the year when we officially open our doors to students; the seal of the Society of Jesus; and mountains, trees, and water, representing the Pacific Northwest’s natural beauty and our kinship with Creation. The four-letter monogram allows us to celebrate our school name, with a nod to a collegiate style in honor of our students’ academic goals.

We are proud to be part of the Cristo Rey Network with its storied history and celebrate our new school identity as unique and individual as the community we serve.

Please join us for a volunteer work party on Wednesday, July 12 from 5:00-7:00pm at the St. Paul campus in Seattle. Our focus of this work party will be packing up children’s books from the library to donate to another school and moving donated desks into the school building.

We need at least a dozen volunteers - so please reach out to

The Growing CRJS Founding Team

Two new, talented professionals joined our founding team this month. Brother Jeff Allen S.J., is our Director of Information Technology and Becky Wilson is our new Director of Marketing.

Brother Jeff served as IT Director at four high schools, including Loyola High, Jesuit in Sacramento, St. John’s Jesuit in Belize, and Verbum Dei, the Cristo Rey school in Los Angeles. With an additional six years as IT Director of Jesuits West Province, Jeff brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to CRJS. Jeff will provide technical expertise and spiritual guidance to our students and staff, and will reside at the Arrupe House/Jesuit Residence at Seattle University, strengthening our ties to that magnificent local Jesuit work.

Becky is a graphic designer and marketing professional with over seven years of experience working in Seattle-area schools, including Kennedy Catholic High School. Becky is an alumna of Loyola University Chicago and was a graphic designer for the university. She also served on the communications team at Old St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in downtown Chicago. Becky brings a wide variety of marketing and design skills to the team and is passionate about clear, concise communication. Says Becky,

"After only two weeks at CRJS, I am inspired by the passion and commitment of our team and the Cristo Rey mission. My goal is to translate this energy into our storytelling; into our logos, colors, documents, website - anywhere folks might interact with CRJS.”
